Third Time Lucky
It failed as "The Aristocrat" and again as "The Blue Ribbon." A secretary in the ad department suggested a third name for Jim's burger.

Jim did.
Jim was the local franchisee for a growing fast food chain near Pittsburgh … he loved the work and, while happy selling the chain’s products, he liked to experiment in the kitchen coming up with additional items to beef up the menu.
Well one day Jim came up with something Big. It was an innovative sandwich, he called the Aristocrat … unfortunately, the name didn’t resonate well with customers in blue collar Pittsburgh so sales were poor … not to be deterred he doubled down and tried a new name. The Blue Ribbon … but that also failed miserably. Jim was in a pickle.
Finally, head office noticed and made an offer … lettuce help you … and that’s when an advertising secretary gave the sandwich a new name … one that stuck … and sales went crazy … first in Pittsburgh and then everywhere else as the sandwich was introduced across the entire chain.
Today, the original Aristocrat sandwich that franchisee Jim Delligatti created in his fast food kitchen is famously known worldwide by its new name. A name celebrated in a catchy jingle … and even by economists who use the sandwich to measure the cost of living in different countries. The Big Mac.
The Big Mac is a great idea because sometimes the special sauce for success, is just the right name.
