Harry did …

Harry was a young Canadian producer who worked for Granada Television, in England around the time of the Queen’s Coronation.

One day, a young, frustrated kid’s show writer came into Harry’s office begging for a chance to do something, anything else. Looking out at all the houses and streets below Harry said ok … you have 24 hours …write about something out there … waving his arm at the window … something that will take Britain by storm.

Well the writer came back the very next day with a script and Harry really liked it, but senior Granada executives weren’t so sure … it wasn’t quite funny, and it wasn’t quite a documentary. But Harry didn’t give up. He had two pilot episodes shown throughout the Granada building to favourable feedback … and then pointed out that the series would employ a lot actors and crew in Northern England which was a condition of Granada’s licence. The executives finally relented, and 13 initial episodes were commissioned.

Today, 50 years later and now over 10,000 episodes later, the show Harry Elton relentlessly pushed for is still crazy popular in England, Canada and pretty well everywhere else as the world’s longest running soap opera … Coronation Street.
